State the question clearly and precisely.

Avoid vague questions that could lead students to the divers review. If you use the word "how" or "why" in an essay question, students will be better able to develop a thesis. As examples of the essay and short-answer questions:

Poor: What are three types of the market concern ? In what ways are they different from one another?

Better: Define oligopoly. How does oligopoly differ from both perfect competition and monopoly in terms of the  number of firms, control over price, shape of the entry, cost structure, and long-term prudence?

What is being proposed?

The proposal is that The University of Edinburgh should enable students to use the computer to compose their essay-examination responses in the formal examinations.

The solution proposed is to the use student owned laptops, with the students downloading the necessary software (Exam 4 from a company called Integrity) prior to the examination. (The question paper is the still distributed in the exam hall.) Clearly students need time to the familiarize themselves with the software, but experience to the date shows that the download and install are the easy and that typically students feel comfortable with the greatly less than half an hour practicing with the software.ask students to the put the number or alias on the exam and to place that number / alias on an index card that is the turned in with the test, or have students write their names on the last page of the blue book or on the back of the test.
